Community Projects Bittersweet Farms Kids in the Kitchen Sunshine Children's Home

Unemployment within the nation’s developmentally challenged population hovers around 80%.

Partner Background

Established in 1977, Bittersweet Farms is an 80 acre working farm located in Whitehouse, Ohio for adolescents and adults with autism. Their mission is to maximize opportunities for individual development of persons with autism by providing an array of premier services to individuals, and support to families.

Concept

Any kind of employment for people with autism is challenging. Society has yet to accept people with autism into the work force. There is an emerging need for sheltered employment for those with autism as the numbers are increasing in astronomical proportions.

Junior League of Toledo would put together a business plan for the Bittersweet Farms Product Development Program. Following the approval of the business plan by all parties, Junior League of Toledo would provide leadership during the start-up and stabilization of the program. This project will educate the community about the abilities and capabilities of individuals with autism. This project will provide a model to other communities on how autistic individuals can contribute to their own sustainability and the community as a whole.

One of the day vocational programs at Bittersweet Farms that offers skill development includes a horticulture department with three fully functioning greenhouses and several fields of produce. The proposed project would utilize the established horticulture program while introducing the basil crop as a raw ingredient into the pesto market. The residents will assist with year-round production of basil made possible by a solar green house.

Bittersweet Farms will provide the resources to create the product(s), the depth of inventory required, and will deliver the items throughout the community. Junior League of Toledo will work with the Center for Innovative Food Technology (CIFT) to develop the product; execute the Marketing plan; coordinate distribution and establish sound financial practices for the program.

Goals

Provide adults with autism rewarding responsibilities and compensation. This project will make it possible for Bittersweet Farms to compensate the participants through a structured program developed by Bittersweet Farms and Junior League of Toledo. The program will establish production and deliver a pesto product to market while generating revenue. Additionally, the project will raise awareness of the challenges facing adults with autism in obtaining work and compensation.
