Project Name: Kids In The Kitchen Please click here for more information about the September's event!
Obesity has become an epidemic in the United States. Over the last 30 years, there has been a substantial increase in the number of children who are overweight. In the 1960s, only 5% of children and adolescents were overweight, but, currently greater than 15% of children aged 6-19 are overweight. If a child is overweight by the age of 10-13 there is a 70% chance that he/she will be overweight as an adult. The consequences affect both physical and mental health. Overweight children have increased incidence of hypertension, coronary artery disease, sleep apnea, and type 2 diabetes. There can be psychological complications as well, including low self esteem, increased risk of discrimination, and poor body image. Our organization organizes and executes a large-scale health expo that is free and open to the public focused on educating children and their parents on issues of nutrition and fitness and highlighting the many community resources in these areas. A variety of interactive booths and areas will be available sponsored by local businesses and organizations. By the end of the event the goal is to educate 500 children in the Toledo area about healthy living through food and exercise. JLT’s Kids in the Kitchen event, sponsored by O-I will be held on Saturday, October 10th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. There will be no admission fee, but children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to participate in the event. Goody bags and a free lunch from Panera will be distributed to the first 500 children in attendance. Penta Culinary School will be featured in providing kids an opportunity to learn “in the kitchen” and healthy eating and food preparation. Additionally, Promedica, YMCA and the Dance Centre of NOW will lead kids in some fun “movement” to encourage “active” living! Additionally, the event features an ongoing health fair with local sponsor booths and activity areas to educate attendees about the many healthy eating and living resources in the Toledo area. Other sponsors of the event include Wal-Mart and The Blade. Participants in the event include DARE, Heros, Toledo Grows, Fairwood Chiropractic, Essence Mind and Body Studio, Super Suppers, Daves Performance Footwear, Tropical Smoothie Café and many more! Raffle prizes include a Nintentdo Wii with Wii Fit, bicycles, Mud Hens’ gear, and other great sports equipment!
