Junior League of Toledo Announces 2010 Mary Harriman Award Recipients Women Honored for Significant Commitment to the Toledo-area Community

Toledo, Ohio – June 1, 2010 – Junior League of Toledo is pleased to announce the 2010 recipients of the Mary Harriman Award, who were identified at its annual meeting held on May 17, 2010 at the Carranor Hunt & Polo Club in Perrysburg. Active member Areka Foster of Rossford, and sustaining member Olivia Summons of Toledo are the recipients of this year’s award, which honors long-term commitment to community service.

Foster has been an active member of the League since 2001, serving on multiple committees, including the Chair of the Projects Research and Development Committee and as Vice President of Community Projects. Additionally, Foster has served on various boards and committees of other community organizations. For the past seven years, she has served on board of The Auxiliary of The Toledo Hospital and Toledo Children’s Hospital, which included a two-year term as President. She has also been active with non-profit committees for “An Evening With…Toledo Children’s Hospital”, the Toledo Repertoire Theater, Toledo School for the Arts, and the Victory Center of Toledo. In 2009, she started the Growing to Give Garden, which donated 500 pounds of produce to local food banks last year, and is actively working to double that amount this year. Prior to becoming a sustaining member of the League, Summons served the Toledo-area community as an active member of the League in various capacities. She was President of the League in 1987 – 1988 and was the Chair of several committees including the Town Hall Lecture Series, Volunteer Development, and Sounding Board. Summons put the experience she gained from the League to good use, heading up numerous community initiatives, including the Corporation for Effective Government (CEG), the Toledo Public Schools Committee for School Reform and currently as the Chair of the University of Toledo Board.

In 1997, The Junior League of Toledo created the Mary Harriman Award to identify and acknowledge one active and one sustaining member each year for their significant volunteer service. Mary Harriman, the founder of the Junior League in 1901, was a pacesetter and a visionary as well as a committed, courageous young woman who had a zest for life and a willingness to use her talents and resources to improve the social and economic conditions of her time. By recognizing exceptional local women, this award provides a contemporary link with Harriman’s sense of social responsibility and her ability to encourage others to share their talents through active, effective community service.
